I don't know how many songs I've written. A couple hundred to be sure. I remember the first song I ever wrote. At the wise old age of 13 I tried to make sense of my new-found interest in girls. The song was titled simply, "Woman".

I've been writing pretty much the same song ever since. Yeah, there's broke down cars and drinking songs, but mostly it's about love and loss. I've had both in spades.

"The Songwriter" is a 49 song, 4-CD set that covers some 25 years of my songwriting.

There are so many ways to not make it in the music business that I understand my good fortune to get this far - to still be doing it. I recognize that I've had many peak experiences on and off the stage: A chance meeting and a sit-down dinner with Albert Collins in Amsterdam not long before he died - Johnny Winter waiting just offstage to tell me how good our set sounded and to never give up.

I never expected that one day I would hear words of encouragement from the heroes of my youth. If Johnny Winter thinks I'm cool, then I'm good to go. I'm on it. Besides, what else can a poor boy do?
