I Saw It Coming

about

I lived in Los Angeles two different times in my twenties. About a year each time. My last stint in L.A. I lived in Hollywood, working in a warehouse by day and trying to “make it” by night. I went to all the clubs. Rubbed shoulders with some famous actors and musicians. Schmoozed, boozed and otherwise degraded myself. Played in a few different bands. One day I read a want ad in The Recycler from a band looking for a rhythm guitarist. I can’t remember exactly what it said but I fit the bill. I went to the audition, played a few riffs for their manager and got the gig. I’d heard of these guys before, they were a local band that had achieved a certain level of notoriety. Van Halen even had a song about the lead singer, Top Jimmy. At the first rehearsal I knew I wasn’t long for the gig. These guys were hard-core. It was two o’clock in the afternoon and these guys all had their own eightball of coke and a fifth of their chosen poison. I was this rube from Eugene, Oregon and the only coke I had was of the carbonated variety. They were really great players, though, including one of the best guitarists I have ever known named Carlos Guitarlos, who called me the tall thin kid. There were drugs and hookers everywhere and just all around mayhem. I did three shows with these hoodlums before I high tailed it back to Oregon. Somehow this is a song about my journey to and back from Hollywood.

lyrics

I Saw It Coming

I saw it coming
Wasn’t no surprise
Closed down Old Taylor’s baby
Right before my eyes
Brought to mind some good friends
Dyin’ slow
Sittin’ ‘round the table baby
With their heads hung low
With their heads hung low
With their heads hung low

I saw it coming
A blind man could
Losing more than time
Down in Hollywood
Thinkin’ ‘bout my good friends
Livin’ in the past
Used to be so easy
Living life so fast
Living life so fast
Living life so fast

I saw it coming
Wasn’t no big deal
Time just keep on rollin’
Like a wagon wheel
Brought to mind some old friends
Dyin” slow
Sittin’ ‘round the table
With their heads hung low
With their heads hung low
With their heads hung low

Ah, that’s the way it is down in Hollywood
